Right now an estimated 150 million tonnes of plastic waste is floating in our marine environments. Every year around 11 million additional tonnes make their way into our oceans. However, that number doesn’t even come close to the amount of plastic waste we’ll soon have to deal with if we continue down our business-as-usual trajectory. In fact, if things remain the same, the total mass of plastic waste leaking into the ocean is expected to triple over the next two decades.
